PURPOSE
The Education Van is intended to carry information/education as replaceable/renewable modules/panels. The topics proposed to be started with include Primary Education, Literacy, Health, Sanitation, and Government Schemes. In addition to panels/modules that depict textual matter or graphics the Van is envisaged to carry Audio/Video material. Interactive modules on computers are also being planned to be added. These materials would be carried to each village one theme at a time and to a well-defined target group. It may also be possible to carry a few laboratory equipments along with the Van to be demonstrated to the school children.
PROCESS OUTLINE
CHALLENGES
Communication material -All the material of the vehicle should be so arranged that it could be displayed and re-used. Since the van runs in the interiors of villages with narrow roads, the panels should be made detachable. The panels/modules should be simple, robust, and modular. The region being prone to rusting the moving parts and other connections must be rust proof for minimum maintenance. The sides of the Van may house the panels/modules while the back of the Van may have a provision for housing a screen required to project films onto.
Vehicle specifications - The Vehicle needs to have a minimal turning radius and overall width. Length of chassis may not be as much an issue as is the width (because of the fact that most of the internal roads are not more than 12’ wide). The van is proposed to be custom fabricated (single vehicle) and hence, mass production principles do not apply. Most of the components are ready-sourced from the market.
Communication -After various discussion sessions with volunteers and target user groups, it was felt that in order to evoke interest among people and appeal to all age groups, we need to design a character that portrays a local smart school going girl. Most of the other characters are centered around this girl, more or less related to her. Environments communicated as part of programme are drawn from actual environments at the target locations. Most of the communication is very local, direct and impactful.
