GSM USB EDGE MODEM

OVERVIEW

USB GSM Modems provides global wireless access to the Internet and e-mail. With this device, user can log on to the Internet anywhere with notebook computer. Modems can also be used to make calls, send and receive text messages. This modem takes DC power directly from the USB interface, so no charging device or external AC/DC adapter is required.

CHALLENGES

Common interface for multiple devices:
The interface needed to be common user interface for multiple devices like USB Edge Modem and PCMCIA Card for GSM and CDMA, which meant that we needed to have experts in respective areas working simultaneously on the design.

User Experience & Visual Design:
The user experience of the software should be rich visually and in interaction. Interface of the application should be fresh, attractive and intuitive to the user’s, considering that this is a desktop application.

Icons and Graphic Design:
We need to design consistent icons for main features like phone book, SMS, calls, dial number, drafts, settings ...etc., so that identifying them is intuitive.

Identity & Branding:
The User Interface and Visual Design needed to be as per company’s brand usage guidelines.

Time constraints:
Project had to be delivered in a short time frame… Think Design needed to motivate its design team as well as client’s implementation team to implement project in given time frame.

SOLUTION

In less than Four weeks, working in close cooperation with the client's in-house team, we successfully designed the User Interface that met most of the initial requirements. The users' reactions to the new interface was found to be positive.

WHAT DID THE CLIENT ASK?

The interface should be simple to set-up and use with self installing software. The interface should be visually rich and vibrant. User experience, look and feel should be contemporary and in tune with current desktop applications. It can send/receive text or use voice capabilities. Further, interface needed to be intuitive and easy to use.

DESIGN PROCESS

This project required a number of techniques to be applied quickly, precisely and in coordination with development team. Clearly identified processes were: Concept Design, Task Analysis, Comparative Analysis, Visual Layout, Interface Prototyping by applying User Centered Design process (UCD)
