AMR - Automated Meter Reading Software
AMR software is real time software for collecting data from energy meters and is scalable to collect data from other standard energy meters. The software consolidates and processes meter readings, received from different locations using GSM/GPRS technology. The software can handle data reception from 250 remote locations concurrently and stores the data in database for report generation and with cutting edge technologies it conquers billing disputes and Meter tampering. It helps in improving the operational efficiency.
THE PROBLEM
The client wanted a next generation Automated Meter Reading Software to be user friendly, simple and effective to use without extensive training. Think Design started design process with usability study. During the study design team has identified four major usability bottle necks.
- Navigation and action items were not consistent across the application.
- User experience was not intuitive.
- Information and visual design was cluttered in many screens.
- Text was presented in white color on dark backdrop(reverse text), which was difficult to read and comprehend.
Client wanted us to reduce the no. of application screens without losing out on features and functionality, which was a challenging task. Client also needed a web based solution to monitor reports, alerts and meter tampering disputes.
Our Involvement
Usability Study, task analysis, navigation design, concept sketches, wireframes, walkthrough presentations, visual design, software branding and implementation coordination.

THE PROCESS
The process started with complete understanding of the application flow and its functions. Our design team structured a tailor-made design process for the project. In addition to providing user experience and visual design services, Think Design also provided workflow insights. This design process helped development team in improving software development process.
THE SOLUTION
Think Design team worked closely with development team and made the prototypes which could be directly used for development using Visual Studio. All the mockups for entire flow was designed and parallel review was conducted to check minor usability issues. Finally, Visual designs were designed along with the icons and necessary UI elements.
However the short engagement did not allow us to address all of the complex screens, but the User Experience Design and Visual Design framework allowed the client for further development.
