In today’s fast paced and dynamic markets such as India, it has become very complex to understand and gauge needs, wants and aspirations of users… especially because of the diversity in cultures, climates and mindsets. The challenges are similar in other emerging markets. Companies are constantly facing challenges in defining their “Grand Strategy” which has now become much more dynamic, triggered by the complexities mentioned earlier.

As traditional “Inside out” approach is fast becoming redundant, it has become critical to apply “Outside in” approach to innovations. Successful innovations are no longer about scientific, engineering or supply-chain processes… there is a constant pressure on companies now to define their Grand Strategy through a “Outside In” approach. WHAT IS INNOVATION?

At Think Design, we define innovation as a “New way of doing things”. Whether, you are creating a new product for specific user needs or you are creating a new aesthetic by applying previously unknown processes, whether you are developing new textures for interior application or you are creating a furniture item applying improved joinery details, you are in the arena of Innovation. What is critical to understand here is, why does one need to innovate?

WHY INNOVATION IS IMPORTANT?

Innovation is a proven driver of economy. Further, successful innovations often lead to positive outcomes: whether it is growth of an organization or innovator or it is success of a particular product or service that help user realize his needs. In today’s dynamic markets such as India, it is very important to constantly innovate in order to keep up with the pace of change imposed by market conditions, triggered by changing user profiles.

One of the most interesting examples is the rapid change that occurred in trends in home furniture segment in India, especially in the last decade: Wrought Iron furniture, which had suddenly become popular out of nowhere had suddenly become outdated within a span of five years. Think Design helped one such Wrought Iron furniture manufacturer evolve into the category of “Lifestyle Wall Décor” applying the same processes and skills needed to produce Wrought Iron Furniture.
